What Kind of Implants are Right for You?

A breast implant is inserted into the breast pocket during breast augmentation to enhance the size and structure of the breasts. Implants can either be silicone-filled or saline-filled. Implant sizes are measured in cubic centimeters (cc) and size is determined based on your body proportions and the breast size you are looking to achieve. Implant sizes range from 100cc to 800cc, with most patients opting for a size between 250cc-500cc. (1)

Types of Breast Implants

Today, there are many different types of implants you can choose from. Every type of implant comes with their own unique benefits. The type of implant that will be best for you will be determined when you meet with Dr. Howard for a personal consultation. Breast implant size and fill selection typically considers patient preference, one’s unique anatomy, and overall medical history.

The implant itself may feel either smooth or textured. The texturing on the surface may reduce unwanted movements or rotation of the implants. Texturing can also help lower the possibility of capsular contracture when placed above the chest wall. Capsular contracture is when scar tissue tightens around a detected foreign object inside the body, which in this case is the silicone or saline implant.(2) Dr. Howard’ extensive experience and advanced, innovative techniques minimize the chances of risk. Following recovery directions is crucial for optimal results with any kind of implant.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are breast implants that are pre-filled with silicone gel that is designed to better mimic natural breast tissue. Visible rippling is less likely to occur with silicone implants, making them more suitable for patients with thinner skin. Many patients and surgeons feel as though silicone implants look and feel more natural than their saline counterparts. Because they are always inserted pre-filled, the procedure typically requires a larger incision.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are breast implants that consist of a silicone outer shell with a saline filling. They are more prone to visible rippling, especially in those with thinner breast tissue. These implants may feel firmer and less natural compared to silicone implants. If a saline implant is not pre-filled, Dr. Howard can make a smaller incision for placement during the procedure. After placing the implant shell in the breast pocket, Dr. Howard can fill the implant with saline for a highly customized enhancement.

Benefits

Breast implants can be used for various reconstructive and cosmetic purposes. In addition to breast augmentation, implants can be used to correct congenital breast anomalies, deformities, postmastectomy breast reconstruction, and male-to-female top surgery. Many patients opt for breast implants to improve the size and shape of their breasts and to enhance their confidence.

Candidates

The ideal candidate for breast implants are those who are looking to:

  • Alter the shape, symmetry, and overall look of the breasts
  • Reconstruct their breasts after a mastectomy
  • Correct any visual deformities or injuries

Candidates should also be in good overall health and free from serious medical conditions that could inhibit healing ability. Candidates who are undergoing weight loss or experiencing significant weight fluctuations should wait until they are at or near their ideal weight before considering breast augmentation with implants. Gaining or losing a significant amount of weight after receiving your implants may affect your results.

Candidates who smoke should be prepared to quit throughout the duration of their implant journey, as nicotine and tobacco can create complications and negatively impact your recovery. Breast augmentation surgery is not recommended for those who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning on pregnancy due to the physical and hormonal changes your body undergoes during these processes.

Preparation

Prior to the procedure, you will undergo a medical evaluation to check your physical wellness and medical history. Patients may also be asked to stop certain medications. Individuals who smoke should be prepared to temporarily stop before their procedure, and refrain from smoking until they are fully recovered. Patients are also asked to fast a few hours prior to the procedure.

Further preparation instructions will be provided by Dr. Howard during your personal consultation. Specific instructions may vary based on your medical history, lifestyle, and implant type.

Procedure

At the start of the procedure, our team will administer anesthesia to maximize comfort. Once the patient is properly prepared, Dr. Howard will make the incisions necessary to create a pocket for the implant. This can be either above or below the chest muscles–also known as subglandular and submuscular placement, respectively. Creating a pocket above the muscle and under the breast tissue may allow for a shorter recovery time. However, this method may create a less natural look for thinner patients. Choosing to create a pocket below the chest muscle can reduce the risk of rippling and create a more natural appearance.(1)

After the breast pocket is created, Dr. Howard can insert the implant. Implants may be inserted empty or pre-filled, depending on the type of implant chosen. Silicone implants are always inserted pre-filled; meanwhile, saline implants can either be pre-filled or empty for insertion. If a saline implant is inserted empty, Dr. Howard will fill the implant with the appropriate amount of sterile saltwater.

Recovery

Patients can expect to experience swelling and soreness during the initial phase of recovery. For the first two days, you should avoid lifting your arms, and completely refrain from attempting to lift heavy objects. We recommend taking this time to rest and limit your movement overall. We do, however, encourage gentle walking to promote healthy blood flow.

Most patients find that they can return to light activities about 2 weeks after their procedure. Patients can expect to see the full results of their augmentation after swelling subsides and the implants settle into position, which will take about 2-3 months. Patients can return to their full normal activities and start participating in more exercise upon Dr. Howard’s approval. Recovery durations may vary depending on your unique situation.

Results

The breasts may initially appear to be at a higher position, but they will settle into their new placement after a few weeks. Our patients here at Dr. Howard’s practice often report a boost in self-esteem and confidence after receiving breast implants. Choosing the right breast implant that aligns with your aesthetic goals and your unique anatomy can provide stunning, long-lasting results. Regardless of the implant you choose, it is important to keep in mind that implants must be replaced after a period of 10-15 years. Regular MRIs are required for patients who receive silicone implants.

Cost of Breast Implants in the Greater Chicago Area

The cost of your implants can depend on a number of factors such as size, implant material, placement, and overall treatment plan. The cost and price breakdown is discussed with each patient at their personal consultation with Dr. Howard to ensure each patient has a full understanding of every detail involved in their treatment.
